Crinoline Lady Candlewick
03/09/2011
Been anticipating this one for a while, client wants it finished for our local show in October.  I like candlewicks as there is a lot of blank space to show off my quilting.  The blocks in this quilt are 40 cm x 40 cm, so I have to dream up a suitable frame effect for the Crinoline Ladies.  Did the right thing this time and drew a few options in blue pen before deciding which to use.  Went back through some of the others I've done for inspiration.  I like the square frame, but decided that the circular frame fit better with the theme of the quilt, but the corner motifs are more informal with open feathers and scrolls.  Tried a pebble filler, but decided also that old faithful meander suited the quilt top theme better.

Hand Pieced 60° Triangles

This was a top my client had had for some years before deciding to have it quilted.  The assembly of the triangles formed alternating rows of stars with terracotta coloured points, with 'fillers' of hexagons in soft green and apricot.
Quilt Body:
To emphasize the stars, I quilted them in fairly relaxed feathers to form a snowflake style pattern, and the hexagons became six-petal flowers with a smallish meander background.  Apart from the meandered areas, I did try to leave some breathing space on the hand stitched seams (about 4-5mm or a scant 1.4 inch).

Borders:
There were 2 plain borders, a green and a brown.  This was not a large quilt, so where it seemed appropriate, I extended the quilting design into the borders to complete the snowflake motifs, even when the piecing was not there.

Grandmother's Braid Quilt
15/07/2011
Made in colours of soft pink, green and tea, this quilt is constructed of 9 pieced strips about 6 in wide by 63 in long.  The pieced sections are constructed of 2 in strips pieced in a chevron or 45 degree pattern.  The sections are joined with ¼ in green ‘peepers’.  The first border is green print about 1 ½ in wide.  The final border is in a medium floral print about 9 ½ in wide.
Initial Quilting:
I stitched in the ditch each side of the green border, down the side of each pieced section underneath the green peepers, and in the ‘V’ ditches of the 2 in strips.  This did not look enough work on the V strips, so I did another row of straight stitching midway between each ditch seem, so that I ended up with rows of stitching about 1 in apart.  This added vigour and made a nice ruched effect.  The peepers were a bit pleated, but the SID stabilised and straightened them.
First Border:
Using green thread, I did  straight stitch ¼ in inside the seams.  Using a scrapbooking template I marked a pattern of small ovals with blue washable pen, and then stitched the ovals freehand.
Outer Border:
A feather and cable effect was achieved by doing the following.  The side and end sections were divided into partitioned sections for the curved border repeat method.  On the longer sides this was 5 x 45cm sections, and on the shorter ends, it was 3 x 49 cm sections.  A 4 in wide one way single feather was worked around the entire border, then the cable sections were worked using a curved cross hatching template
